Booster Gold
One of the monthly books that I anticipate receiving every month is BOOSTER GOLD. Now, in years past, such a title would be one I would ignore completely. A B-level hero book was usually dull. Then again, even if the book was any good it was bound to be cancelled due to lack of sales making any emotional investment in the title and character worthless.
Today, things have changed because the internet spreads good reviews of titles like wildfire and this has clearly helped sales of the new BOOSTER GOLD series. That's not to say the book is selling multi-platinum copies. DC's sales have been in a slump due to incredibly uninspired storytelling over the past year. But, if there was one bright spot on the comic book horizon it would be BOOSTER GOLD.
Booster was not your average hero. He is a time traveling sad sack who seems to always make a fool out of himself when trying to achieve glory. Booster's problem is that he just tries to hard. When you try to hard, it becomes obvious you are trying. This usually rubs people off the wrong way and you end up with the exact opposite reaction than what you intended. Booster always finds himself in this position because he is looking for glory. When that becomes the focus of a hero then the hero is doomed to disappointment. There are just too many who are jealous of the superheroes to give them their proper due.
Are these points the intended morality lesson of BOOSTER GOLD comics? Probably not, but they are present in the writing. And that is what makes BOOSTER GOLD one of DC's few solid titles on the market.
