Booster Gold
I have to mention that one of the most fun and enjoyable monthly titles I read is DC’s BOOSTER GOLD. Booster is the supreme sad sack hero from the future that screws up time and time again. Of course, he also pulls victory from the jaws of defeat issue after issue but never does get the recognition he deserves.
What is it about the book I dig the most? It is a fun title. Mostly plot driven this is a book that is long on action and short on sermonizing. While I do like some of the more nihilistic titles out there, it is good to see a fun, engaging, old fashioned super hero title with stark good guys vs. stark bad guys.
This is not to say that there is little dramatic content to the title. Booster does evolve and mature from adventure to adventure. This is part of the more powerful elements of the title. Booster often considers himself a failure. Because of this he is motivated to prove to the world and his colleagues that he is a legitimate superhero. This provides the proceedings with additional dramatic energy that makes the relatively simple plots and action more engaging.
