RIP to RIP

For those who want a little insight into how newspapers do not fact check, you may wis to check out this newspaper report on how Batman was killed by his father at the conclusion of RIP. Of course, us fans know this is not accurate. He ain’t dead. And, while we are at it, let’s not even bother trying to explain to those outside our circle that no one dies in comics permanently.

For what its worth, the final two issues in the RIP storyline were pretty good but I wasn’t able to get into the first few chapters. Mainly because they were a little confusing and mainly because Heart of Hush over in Detective comics was a ore engaging story.

And, of course, after decades of reading comics we all no heroes and even villains do not stay dead. When Marvel brought Gwen Stacy back as a clone it really deflated the sails out of the comic line. Then, they upended one of the most powerful story arcs even further when they brought Norman Osborne back from the dead. (well, he really didn’t die) Of course, we could go on forever and ever with this but we all know the score. To paraphrase Fulci’s Zombie “The dead won’t stay dead.”

Then again, we all know Batman didn’t die at the end of the story. The ambiguity (and essential confirmation from DC) is that he is alive but finished with being Batman. Will the future stories remain interesting? As I have always said, a book is only as good as its writing and artwork….
