Chronicles of Dr Herbert West II

Now, back to the business of discussing the comic book The Chronicles of Herbert West. This title takes place during Doctor West's formative years when he, well, developed his reanimation formula.  Of course, we get the usual mayhem of the Doctor reanimating the dead and watching the mayhem quickly ensue. That alone would not make all that great of book.  However, this title draws much of its entertainment value for nailing the character of Herbert West dead on.  He is still the obsessed loner that he was in the movies. However, we do see him and is sympathetic light because he's not doing what he does for himself.  He is not trying to make a profit nor is he trying to take over the world with army of zombies.  He wants to conquer death and disease but no one will listen to him.  If they did listen to him, he could perform his experiments in a controlled environment.  And this would eliminate much of the mayhem. However, no one is listening.....

Then again, there is a bit of selfishness on West's part. West is the perpetual disaffected loner.  He's He is labeled a freak and a geek. This is understandable since he is meddling with CORPSES. However, he is lost in his own world and does not see how is "odd" (that's an understatement) lifestyle makes people think his is nuts. However, he is driven to prove them wrong to show that his experiments will serve a greater good.

You have to give writers Ralph Tedesco and Joe Bruswa a lot of credit. They really got the character right.
