Dead of Night Brings You Werewolf by Night

Dead of Night is an excellent horror anthology series that provides limited series for classic horror creatures in the Marvel Universe. The Man-Thing mini-series launched a few years back was quite excellent and, now, one of my all time favorite characters from the 1970’s was Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night. The book disappeared in the mid-1970’s due to falling sales, but the character returned now and then in appearances in other titles. Then, in the 1990’s, the book returned and it was awful. It completely missed out on what made the original book special. In this new limited series, the look and feel of the original book is back and it also comes with a very hard, modern edge. In issue one, we get a complete revamp of the Werewolf’s origin that is much nastier and crueler. It is also a lot more realistic. I loved the original book but, come on, a werewolf that never killed anyone who lived UNNOTICED in an apartment building? We could overlook such “Marvel flaws” in the old days, but in the modern age we need a little logic. Logic abounds in the new book and that is what makes it so scary. We really do believe the Werewolf could really exist. As for the plot, there is a secret organization looking to get a hold of the werewolf. Is it The Committee from the original series? We’ll find out.
