It is pretty much next to impossible to discuss the great comic book covers of all time without including this shocking cover from the glory days of GREEN ARROW GREEN LANTERN. This was the notorious cover that revealed Speedy was a heroin addict. Lord knows what went through people’s minds when this cover made its debut. It had to have been the most shocking comic book cover in history…part or present. Ultimately, that was the intended goal.

It was a cover that was supposed to shock people in order to make them pay attention to the seriousness of the drug problem that was exploding in the early 1970s. One of the main problems at the time was the refusal to believe how wide spread the problem of drugs had become. Very few people wanted to accept the fact that the Summer of Love era had mainstreamed drugs to the point where many kids were experimenting with serious hard drugs. It was the work of brilliant minds such as Denny O’Neil and Neil Adams that helped bring to the public’s attention in brilliant covers and stories such as this.
