This one may be a little hard to find because it is not a book per se. It is a magazine. Or, more accurately, it is a magazine back issue. In 1983, the Comics Journal published an extremely extensive interview with Bill Gaines. Gaines, as most of you know, was the legendary publisher of Mad Magazine and the various EC Comics.

When I was about 12 or so, I wrote Gaines a fan letter and he wrote me a nice letter back. I still have that letter in my “archives” (boxes in my basement closet) and it really spoke highly of the man that he would take the time out to write a fawning little kid. If you wish to learn a little more about the man and his brilliance, you need to dig out that expansive Comics Journal interview. It goes into more depth into the history of EC Comics than I have ever seen anywhere else. To my knowledge, it is the most in-depth interview with Bill Gaines ever published. Find it and read it. I wouldn’t steer you wrong.
