If DC Had an Ultimates Universe

It's just a thought, but it is a good one. Marvel's rebooting of its classic tales occurs in a number of books within the Ultimate Universe. Much of what goes on in these particular comics is more interesting that what occurs in the "regular" line of books published under Marvel's imprint. Is it time for DC to launch a similar line? After all, it was DC that started the concept.....

You could make a credible argument that the concept of revamping origins started with BATMAN: YEAR ONE and GREEN ARROW - THE LONGBOW HUNTERS. DC was in a hard spot in those days. Sales were declining and fans truly looked at the DC Comics line of heroes and villains as thoroughly being old hat. This is what led to the revamping of characters. John Byrne's Superman: Man of Steel was a huge success in this regard. It helped revitalize a very flagging hero.

There were no real monthly series that opted to launch an alternative retelling of the heroes. Legends of the Dark Knight could be considered the closet they came to this, but very little of the "core" aspects of Batman were changed. This is not to say the stories weren't worth reading. Legends remains one of the very best batman books ever published.

Some could argue there was no need to launch an "Ultimates" universe mainly due to the fact that Crisis on Infinite Earths and Zero Hour helped reboot the universe. But, I still say a DC version of the Ultimates Universe would be a cool idea.
