Some Horror Movie News

The box office success of the Friday the 13th Remake has to have seriously shocked the world. The $45 million that the film pulled in in one weekend is the same amount the original made its its original run in 1980. (Of course, adjusted for inflation the original would have earned $100 million in today's dollars) What is stunning about this is the fact that the Friday the 13 series saw its box office fortunes decline so dramatically that the last official sequel Jason X sat on a shelf for two years before being released to low box office.

A sequel announcement on the next Friday film is forthcoming.

Speaking of sequels, Rob Zombie will be scripting the H2 film which will re-unite the director the returning Malcolm McDowell. McDowell also let it slip that he sign on to THREE more Halloween films so look for the appearance of Michael Myers to be an annual August event. Ironically, the Halloween franchise stays away from October since it apparently does not want to compete with Saw.

The My Bloody Valentine remake was also a huge hit pulling in close to $50 million. No word on a sequel but if they don't make one, well, then they lack good business sense. And, Lord knows, Lionsgate certainly has good business sense when it comes to horror films.

It is somewhat shocking to see horror movies doing so well at the box office since the genre was considered dead from 1988 - 2000. Sure, there was the errant hit here and there but the raw horror films of the past seemed to be a forgotten memory. Not anymore. Horror is back in a big way. Actually, it has been back for a decade......
