Solomon Grundy #1

You have to give DC a lot of credit. A few years ago they realized they were not using many of their classic characters to their fullest potential. That is why the comic company decided to promote some of their lesser known characters. Now, long time readers of comics know that it is the writer and artist who make an enjoyable comic. A great writer can take a weak character and make a great story. A poor writer can ruin even the best superhero. However, some of the best heroes are those that are easy to market. Simply put, Spiderman and Batman will always be more marketable than Green Lantern and Moon Knight. Well, that is generally the case until a really great writer and artist snag the reigns of the comic. Remember, both Daredevil and X-Men were headed towards cancellation in the late 1970s until Miller and Claremont took over and redefined the books.

At this stage of the game, very few DC (or Marvel) books can be considered poorly written. I very rarely pick up a book and end up disliking it. Sometimes, the book is not for me but the writing and the artwork is usually quite good. So, you really can't go wrong with ANY title you buy. Now, when the creative team wants to do something unique and different, the end result is usually something quite special.

This brings us to Solomon Grundy #1.......

In one of my previous posts, I reviewed the prologue to this series and mentioned how much I enjoyed it. The first issue of the mini-series does not disappoint and we see the plot unfold. If Solomon Grundy can find the person who killed him and forgive him within 7 days, he can be cured. Of course, villains abound who want to prevent him from achieving his task and they create a number of obstacles (This is the Hero's Journey concept playing out again). However, it is obvious that the main obstacle in this story will be Grundy himself. Remember, this is not about Grundy punishing the man who led to his curse. It is about him FORGIVING his killer. Can the thuggish, brutish Grundy do this?

Well, if he does, then there is no Grundy, right? Nah. Then again, they have killed off major characters in the past. How will this play out? We'll find out in 7 issues......

Look folks, you need to buy Solomon Grundy #1. It is well worth it.
