Hulk 285 Cover

In terms of its importance to the Hulk mythos, issue 285 was little more than a throwaway villain of the month issue no different from the many other comics I purchased at 7-11 circa 1980 – 1983. However, it still is a solid issue like most of the Bill Mantlo authored Hulk tales at the time. You will notice that in this cool action shot, the Hulk is dressed like a scientist. This is because these issues major-league broke tradition and ceased with the “dumb Hulk” character and presented a new Hulk with Banner’s brain. This would lead to the Joe Fix It character and the “fused” Banner and Hulk character. Now, the development of the character was not a bad thing. The classic Hulk really hit the wall in terms of the type of stories could do with him. So, you could consider these issues seminal in terms of the eventual direction the character.
