Superman World of Krypton
Have I really neglected Superman on the (electronic) pages of this blog? Yeah, I think I have been somewhat disrespectful to the Man of Steel. I am not sure why because I have to say most Superman storyarcs I have read were generally excellent. Actually, many classic Superman stories are ones I return to again and again to read. But, I just haven’t been into the past few years of Superman. Maybe I am still irked they turned Doomsday into “just another villain”. Anyway, let’s forget about all that for a moment because the new mini-series (there is lot of Marvel and DC mini-series out these days) SUPERMAN: WORLD OF KRYPTON see the blue boy scout return to his home of Kryton (Is it really Kryton? Or is it a utopian recreation of it?) and experiences the unfortunate culture shock that his home is actually foreign to him. That is, Superman has grown up as an earthman and when he returns to his roots he feels uneasy with it. This is because much of Kryptonian society is revealed to be totalitarian and segregated. In short, there is no liberty in the Kryptonian world. In most instances, Superman would denounce such a world. It is, in many ways, no different than the totalitarian world of Darkseid with the main difference being Krypton’s establishment of a soft tyranny. Why does Superman not disavow it? Because he is one of them; he is a Kryptonian. Or, is he really an earthman since he left his world as an infant? Clearly, Superman struggles with much on this realm and he is certainly in an identity crisis. To say this is a provocative story would be a dramatic understatement. To say it may be one of the best Superman stories in a long time would not.
