It is interesting to see Man Bat get his own book in the Battle for the Cowl story arc. Man Bat had been featured in his own mini-series in the past, but I have to say he has never been integrated into the Batman universe in the most effective way. In general, Man Bat was promoted as a “B Grade” character that made occasional appearances and was not involved in all that many important story arcs.

This is a shame because he is an interesting character. The idea of a man that shapeshifts into a bat creature opposing a man that symbolically dresses like a bat can have a lot of potential. The obvious subtext here is who is more human? Batman or Man Bat? Considering how emotionally void Batman generally is, a number of arguments can be made that it is Man Bat who retains more control of his humanity. But, such narrative themes have never really been promoted in the Batman books.

Again, this is a shame because the Man bat character does have a bit of potential that has not yet fully been explored. With this new Battle for the Cowl series, perhaps we will see the character of Man Bat fleshed out a little more. Hopefully, this is what the creative team has in mind.
