DEAD OF NIGHT 4: WEREWOLF BY NIGHT

I just picked up the 4th and final issue of the Dead of Night Limited Series featuring Werewolf by Night. Actually, I do not think the use of the word final may be appropriate here. If sales are strong we will surely see the Werewolf back in his own series. In many ways, Dead of Night, is a throwback to Marvel Spotlight or Marvel Preview. That is, the purpose of the book is to feature certain guest stars and see if they sell. If they do well, they get their own book. This is what happened with Werewolf by Night in the early 1970s when his character first debuted in Marvel Spotlight. The Werewolf did get his own book and it ran successfully for a little over 4 years. The problem with the original book was that in the creature’s debut appearance, the character was quickly established as a HORROR character in a HORROR book. This approach remained with the character well into the first 2 years of the book WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. However, the tone of the book started to waiver. Instead of being exclusively a horror series, it shifted to embody superhero elements. Eventually, the book became of hero title and this effectively killed it off. Really, would you want to see a werewolf develop human thoughts and cognition and team side by side with Iron Man? Apparently, many others shared your sentiment and the book was canceled.

With DEAD OF NIGHT 4, we are firmly returned to the grim horror roots of the character. Actually, these stories are the most adult and serious of all the Jack Russell, Werewolf by Night Adventures. As I mentioned once before, this limited series is mostly a re-imagining of the character. What is most unique about it is the fact that it completely changes the relationship between Jack and his sister. I do not want to go into it too much in depth since I don’t want to spoil the book for you. And, yes, I am strongly recommending that you purchase the book.
