Namor's 70th

The Sub-Mariner has long since been a popular staple on the comics scene for a whopping 70 years. So, it is pleasantly surprising to see Marvel release an anniversary tribute to the Sub-Mariner. It was also a nice touch that they released the special under the imprint of a “Timely” comic which was the original name for Marvel comics way back in the Golden Age.

While Namor, The Sub-Mariner has been around forever, he has not had much success in terms of carrying his own titles. Often, they were canceled after short but memorable runs. The Prince of Atlantis basically found himself a guest or supporting player in other hero books or as part of a team. This is unfortunate because the character has frequently been interesting and compelling. I think the one aspect that held him back was the underwater science-fiction/fantasy element may have turned off a number of hero fans. Again, this is a shame because Namor is quite often an engaging hero whose adventures are always a lot of fun. Some folks at Marvel agree with me and the 70h anniversary is a total blast to read.

The book is set in the 1930’s amidst the backdrop of Hitler’s rise to power in Europe. The Sub-Mariner plays the role of an outsider that must choose sides. (Remember, Hitler was not considered a “bad guy” by many in the media and political world at the time although revisionist historians have covered up this rather embarrassing fact) Of course, Namor eventually figures out the Third Reich is not exactly benign. Through this revelation, Namor comes to an understanding about free societies vs. totalitarian ones. And, yes, he does get to smash a lot of U-Boats in the process. This is a really unique book and it is well worth checking out. So, check it out!
