The great Superman, what an iconic character he is. What a shame he does not receive the respect he is due in comics. Without Superman, most of what we know today as the world of comic books would not exist. Yes, there was Batman and Captain America, but did they really capture the imagination of children in the way Superman could? Superman was the all-powerful father figure who was invulnerable to what mere mortals could throw at him. This is what made him such a special and unique character. However, it was also his undoing. No child could grow up to be Superman and such realizations lead them to more traditional and somewhat realistic heroes. This is neither a good thing nor a bad thing. It’s just the way it is as far as superheroes go. But, it you have any preconceptions of who Superman is, I strongly recommend checking out the current appearances of the character in DC Comics. You may discover a new look to Superman you previously were unaware of.

Here is a really cool follow up to the previous post on DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE. Well, it is not so much a follow up as much as it is another YouTube video. This one is a LONG LOST television spot for the film. This is truly a time capsule because they DO NOT make television spots like this anymore. Yes, this spot is somewhat corny but it is effective. You have to remember, most horror movies in the 1960s were advertised on late night television horror programs. These programs mainly aired old black and white films that drew a kid’s audience. Some of these kid’s could even be coaxed into venturing into a theater for more modern fair. That is why oddball commercials such as this creepy TV spot were produced. They were designed to capture the imagination of little kids, frighten them, and get them to buy tickets!

Since I have been adding YouTube clips on this site for a while now, I figured I would take the time to mention this classic Hammer Horror film since I watched on YouTube last night. Wow. It has been well over two decades since I have seen it and I really do have to rank it alongside Horror of Dracula and Scars of Dracula as the best of the Christopher Lee Hammer Dracula films.
What I liked most about this sequel is we get a much more aggressive Dracula that is actively involved in the plot of the film. In most other Dracula outings, the King of the Vampires is relegated to supporting role. This is unfortunate as Lee surely could have handled a much more complex portrayal. But, budget was always an issue with the Hammer films and that means there was not always much they could do with the character since the scope of the film was limited. What a shame.
Those that do want to see a truly thrilling and – dare it be said – frightening Dracula film, this is one to check out. I first saw it on an old black and white TV when it aired on UHF in the late 1970s. It popped up repeatedly on TV throughout the 1980s. It ended up on TNT with the rest of the Hammer library in the 1990s but I didn’t catch on cable in those days. Ditto for its Sci-Fi Channel and AMC airings over the past decades. Geez, this film has never been out of circulation and I haven’t seen it since 1988? Where have I been?

It seems to me that the days of self-contained, single issues or two to four part storylines are becoming a thing of the past. Okay, they really aren’t but bear with me. The more comics I read these days, the more obvious it appears major events are almost always a result of a major story arc that features crossovers and tie-ins throughout the universe. Sometimes the writers hit a home run with these crossovers and sometimes their results fall below expectations. With the final issue of Ultimatum, we are treated with a truly stunning conclusion to a series that completely blew me away.
The Ultimate Universe is one that I follow religiously. The writing is excellent at times but slips into downbeat and dreary territory often. Such writing can be a REAL turnoff and I don’t feel I am alone in such sentiments. People read comics to be enlightened and entertained. They don’t want to be depressed. That said, the final issue of Ultimatum is hardly one that is bright eyed and cheery. In fact, you could call it somewhat nihilistic as many characters face the ultimate price for committing crimes that are just not forgivable. Sadly, a number of heroes also meet their end trying to end the carnage these villains have brought upon the world.
